Né sous le nom de Paul Douglas Fleischer, a débuté sa carrière en tant qu'acteur de théâtre. Il fait ses débuts à Broadway en 1936 en tant qu'annonceur à la radio. En 1946, il remporte à la fois un Theater World Award et un Clarence Derwent Award pour son interprétation de Herry Brock dans Born Yesterday de Garson Kanin.
A commencé dans des films en 1949,Angels in the Outfield (1951) et It Happens Every Spring (1949).
