Malgré une carrière plutôt éclectique, il est surtout connu du grand public pour le rôle de Gandalf dans les trilogies Le Seigneur des anneaux et Le Hobbit de Peter Jackson, ainsi que pour celui de Magnéto dans les films X-men.
Il est chevalier commandeur dans l'ordre de l'Empire britannique et membre de l'ordre des compagnons d'honneur.
